We recently requested information from Westminster City Council on the status of the new Marylebone Library after a number of inquires as to the status from a number of Association members. Here is the reply from Tristan Samuels, Head of Major Projects at Westminster City Council.
"Earlier this year (February) we procured a preferred development partner for the library site and commenced contract negotiations, however in September, following an extended period of discussion the developer conceded they could not honour their tender and has stepped away from the project. Since then we have been working to put alternative delivery plans in place and now expect to make a positive announcement on this in early December. I can confirm that the Council remains committed to delivering a state-of-the-art new library for local residents and that since the planning decision, the team have continued to work on de-risking the site with numerous surveys, build over agreements and rights of light negotiations being agreed. This work is not wasted and will support the delivery team and allow them to move quickly when they are in place.
I can also confirm that while a delay to the opening of the new library is unavoidable at this point, the council will keep the temporary library open as long as necessary to ensure a continuous library service for residents.
