In December, after 22 years with the estate and 19 years as chairman, Peter Barton is to be succeeded by Sir William Proby, a current family trustee.
Proby is a former accountant, investment banker and the owner of a landed estate. He has held roles including chairman of the National Trust, chairman, now patron, of the Historic Houses Association and chairman of the National Portrait Gallery. He is also chairman of Retirement Advantage, a life assurance company. Lord Kakkar has also been appointed as a non-executive director. Kakkar is a professor of surgery and a cross-bench member of the House of Lords.
