Councillor Audrey Lewis – A perspective on her life in Marylebone

Councillor Audrey Lewis – A perspective on her life in Marylebone

It is with great sadness that I write about Councillor Audrey Lewis who sadly passed away over the weekend of July 11th and 12th. She was an extremely hard-working Councillor for Bryanston and Dorset Square and a great friend of the greater Marylebone Community.

I met Audrey about seventeen years ago during the early days of my tenure as Dean of Students at International Students House (ISH), when she was Chair of the Marylebone Association. ISH was in the process of applying for a Public Entertainments Licence (PEL) and Audrey had responsibility for monitoring licensing applications and premises on behalf of the Association. Her knowledge of licensing regulations proved invaluable and we were eventually granted the PEL. During this process we got on very well and ultimately Audrey asked if I would be interested in a place on the Association Committee representing ISH and the student sector. The rest is history.

Audrey Lewis was elected a Ward Councillor in 2002 and served in the Cabinet since 2004. She was Chairman of the Westminster Licensing Committee, a position where she used her knowledge and experience to great effect. Audrey was a great friend of the Marylebone Association and always took an interest in what the Committee was up to and would offer sage advice when needed. She was responsible for initiating the annual Marylebone Interfaith Service and I enjoyed working with her on the service at the Swedish Church in 2013 and at the Church of the Annunciation last year.

Audrey was a pleasure to work with. She could be formidable, but was also kind and generous and had a great sense of humour. During a recent lunch together we talked about how much she had enjoyed her year as Lord Mayor of Westminster, which had come to an end in June this year. Audrey was always willing to assist those with problems and to do what was best for the residents of Marylebone. She was working on my behalf on a housing-related issue at the time of her death.

The Marylebone Association and Westminster City Council have lost an effective and dynamic Councillor - but also a great friend. Cllr. Audrey Lewis will be much missed and the thoughts and prayers of the MA Committee Members are with Audrey's family and friends at this sad time.
