Government to examine effect disposable drink packaging

The problem of disposable packaging (coffee cups, plastic bottles etc.)littering our streets and countryside is increasing. You only have to look in our own area of Marylebone at the number of coffee shops dispensing drinks and snacks in disposable packaging to see where the problem lies. New initiative to win the fight against childhood tooth decay in Westminster

Westminster City Council has launched a new initiative to improve children’s dental health with a conference featuring representatives from local schools, dental services and relevant community groups. The initiative aims to improve children’s dental health in Westminster, and tackle a situation that sees the area have the 4th highest level of child tooth decay for 5 year olds in London. The aim of bringing together the key groups with influence over children’s oral health builds upon existing practical schemes including promoting fluoride varnishing and providing a free toothbrush and toothpaste to all primary school reception pupils.

86 New Phone Boxes planned for West End

The Evening Standard reports that there are plans for 86 new phone boxes to be installed across the West End. 18 are earmarked for Oxford Street alone, with others in Piccadilly, Strand, Buckingham Palace Road and Baker Street as well as Covent Garden and Marylebone High Street. Applications to install them were lodged with the council last month by a company called Maximus Networks, owned by the founder of an outdoor advertising business. The boxes will not have a wi-fi connection. However, the council has only limited powers to block them, or the advertising they carry, under “permitted development” rules and it is asking the Government for new legal powers.

Marylebone under Heathrow’s 3rd runway flightpath

When you moved to Marylebone you probably did not imagine you would be living under the flightpath of Heathrow. Well that is exactly what the third runway means for Marylebone & Mayfair. It might all seem a long way off but now is the time to understand what this will actual means for your quality of life and to make your voice heard. You might think that Heathrow expansion is long overdue and an end of those days of delays coming into land will be a good thing. The ten minutes saved in the air coming into land will undoubted be lost on the ground as the surface infrastructure of road and rail is not growing proportionately to meet the increased passenger capacity. Concentrating increasing passenger numbers in one location will only compound many of the existing problems. Living under the flight path will certainly not help our local air quality. The main issue will be aircraft noise. If you want to know what it will sound like take a walk in Battersea Park as this will be a similar height that the planes will fly over Marylebone and Mayfair. It might make a welcome change to the helicopter noise we routinely suffer, especially on summer evenings.
